What is Visa reason code 82?

Visa reason code 82 was the code for Duplicate Processing. It belonged to Visa's older rule set. You may still see it on old notices or in older records.

The code was used when one sale was processed more than once on the same card number. The cardholder paid twice for a single purchase. The issuer then took the extra payment back through a chargeback.

If you got a notice with this code, the claim was not about fraud or a bad product. The claim was that the same transaction went through two times.

Common causes of a reason code 82 chargeback

Duplicates usually come from a process error, not from anyone trying to cheat. A few things cause most of them.

  • A terminal sends the same sale twice, often after a timeout or a retry.
  • Staff key in a manual entry, then also run the card.
  • A batch settles with the same sale in it two times.
  • A refund or a reversal never gets sent, so the extra charge stays on the card.

Most of these can be stopped before they happen. Check that each sale is run once. Watch for error messages that tempt a second try. Match your batch totals against your sales log before you settle.

If you catch a double charge before the cardholder does, send the refund right away. A quick refund costs far less than a chargeback.

How to respond to a reason code 82 chargeback

A merchant could fight this code with proof that the two charges were real, separate sales. The key evidence was two separate signed or imprinted receipts. Those receipts showed the cardholder made two purchases, not one purchase charged twice.

That proof only works if the sales were really separate. If the same sale really did go through twice, do not fight the case. Accept it, refund the extra charge, and fix the process that caused it.

If you are not sure what the notice is telling you, start with how to read a chargeback notice. Find the code and read the claim before you pick a response.

Once you send your reply, the case may not be over. The issuer can still push back in a later round. See what happens after you answer a chargeback so you know what to watch for.

Reason code 82 vs. modern Visa dispute categories

Reason code 82 is not part of Visa's current system. As part of the VCR Initiative, Visa consolidated its 22 legacy reason codes into four dispute categories. The old numeric codes, including 82, were retired from use.

A duplicate charge today falls under a different label in the new categories. If your notice shows a modern code instead of 82, the claim is the same in spirit: one sale, charged more than once.

A close cousin of this claim is Visa reason code 12.6. That code covers a duplicate that was already paid back by another means. The two claims sound alike, but they are not the same thing.

Is reason code 82 still in use today?

No. The code belongs to the old rule set and no longer appears on new disputes. You will only run into it on old cases or old paperwork.

If you see it, treat it as a duplicate processing claim. Find out whether the sale really ran twice. Then either refund the extra charge or send the receipts that prove two real sales.
