Mastercard reason code 4808 is the Authorization-related Chargeback. It is one of the codes in the Authorization group. When you see it on a notice, the issuer is saying a transaction was not properly authorized. That claim is what you have to answer.

What is Mastercard reason code 4808?

Mastercard sorts its chargebacks into four categories: Authorization, Cardholder disputes, Fraud, and Point-of-Interaction Error. Code 4808 sits in the Authorization group. An issuer may start a chargeback when the transaction meets the requirements of a chargeback reason code. For 4808, the requirement is an authorization problem, not fraud and not a complaint about the goods.

If you are new to these notices, start with how to read a chargeback notice. The code tells you what the issuer claims, and the claim tells you what proof to send.

Why issuers use reason code 4808

Authorization-related disputes usually come from an issuer saying a transaction was not properly authorized. Maybe the approval was missing, or maybe it did not cover the amount taken. The issuer believes the sale should never have gone through.

There is a rule that protects you here. Before using this chargeback, the issuer must first try to honor the transaction. It cannot jump straight to a dispute. If it did not try to honor the sale first, the chargeback may not meet the code's rules. That matters when you decide how to answer.

Also note that an issuer gets only one chargeback for each presented transaction amount. It cannot keep filing 4808 on the same sale.

How to respond to a 4808 chargeback

The acquirer can respond by showing the transaction was authorized and presented within the chargeback protection period. That is the core defense. Pull the authorization record and the clearing record, and check the dates on both.

You have two ways to answer. The acquirer may second present when the chargeback did not meet the reason code rules. It can also answer the original dispute with proof. Pick the route that fits your papers.

There is one case with a clear answer. If a cardholder got both a chargeback credit and a merchant refund, the acquirer must second present showing the refund. The cardholder cannot be paid twice for one sale.

The chargeback protection period explained

The chargeback protection period is the window in which the transaction must have been authorized and presented. If your records show the sale was approved and sent for settlement inside that window, the 4808 claim fails. If the sale missed the window, the claim may stand. Check the dates before you write anything else.

Relationship to older codes 4807 and 4812

You may see old labels on new cases. Older codes 4807 and 4812 may still label an Authorization-related case filing, but they will eventually be eliminated. If your notice shows 4807 or 4812, read it as the same family of dispute as 4808. The old Visa codes 71, declined authorization and 72, no authorization covered similar ground on that network.

Next steps after a 4808 chargeback

After the chargeback cycles, the issuer may continue the dispute through pre-arbitration and arbitration case filing. For most disputes, an issuer that wants to continue must first file a pre-arbitration case. For ATM and Maestro transactions, pre-arbitration is optional, and the issuer may go straight to an arbitration case.

Watch that first filing. If the acquirer takes no action on a pre-arbitration case, it accepts financial responsibility for the transaction. The acquirer may reject a pre-arbitration case with a rebuttal and any relevant documents.

One timing rule can sink you. Mastercard ignores second presentment documents received once a pre-arbitration or arbitration case has been filed. Send your papers before that point. When the issuer and acquirer cannot resolve an arbitration case, Mastercard decides who is responsible.
